This Invoice for a Portmanteau with engraved brass plate is dated 7th June 1828 and is for £1 10 shillings. From the date of this Invoice and lack of representation in the 1823 Pigot's London Directory, it can be assumed that N. Hosking's first set up in business in the mid 1820's. Describing himself as a manufacturer of solid leather portmanteaus, trunks and imperials of every description, this invoice clearly shows that portable beds were also a large part of his business. Added to this, we have also had a campaign chest made by Hosking. The chest was unusual in that not only were the 2 sections united by bolts, rather than lugs but all the handles were marked with the maker's details. This early invoice gives the 2 addresses of 339 Oxford Street and 9 Blenheim Street, off Oxford Street. Hosking's later moved to 341 & 342 Oxford Street and are listed under this address in the 1865 London Directory. The business is listed as owned by Mrs. Mary Hosking, under trunk makers, at this date, and it was probable that she succeeded N. Hosking as his wife. It is not unusual for campaign furniture makers to be listed in the directories as trunk makers and it is clear that Hosking were a fairly well established company producing good work. Dated 1828.
